Barry Lee I signed up for a beginner’s course with David and Paula having no previous yoga experience. I started practicing regularly and pretty much immediately noticed a whole range of physical and mental benefits. At a physical level, I had been really interested in fitness and had played sport for years. However, I noticed that years of going to the gym had caused by body to stiffen up and I had a lot of recurring injuries: weak ankles, tight hamstrings and a bad shoulder to name but a few. After a few months regular practice I had noticed a real improvement in how my body felt. More importantly, the practice had a hugely beneficial impact on my state of mind, which I had not anticipated. I found myself to be calmer and more self-aware. This was only after a few months, so I was really excited about what I had discovered.

I found the beginners course to be really well structured. It felt like it had the right balance between theory and practice. As a group of 12 or so, mix of men and women, we had lots of time for questions and discussion. David has a world class knowledge of yoga and his introduction of the subject was completely eye opening. The health and lifestyle benefits that I have reaped after taking this course  are vast and 18 months later I am still attending classes. I would highly recommend this course to anyone thinking of taking up yoga – you won’t be disappointed.

I injured my back over 10 years ago rupturing 2 disks. I suffered for many years controlling the pain with pain killers. My mobility was completely limited and for such a young person I was restricted in what I could do physically and eventually I became worn down emotionally too.  The pain then began extend to my neck and my knees also. My knees began to swell and the pain when I walked was unbearable.  I had tried many other therapies which helped the pain to a certain extent but didn’t eliminate it completely.

I live in Blackrock and walked past the Ashtanga Yoga Dublin Shala many times. I always heard that Ashtanga yoga was the “hardest” yoga to practice so I was fearful of signing up. I eventually bit the bullet and decided to give Ashtanga Yoga Dublin a call and talked to David. David assured me that Ashtanga yoga was for all and that you only do what you are capable of and never push beyond your capabilities. With that I decided to sign up and do the beginners course. I was absolutely captivated by the weekend. What I was hearing from David felt too good to be true…. that such a practice could cure us of physical and emotional issues. I wanted to give it a try to see!  The beginners weekend gave me such insight into the traditional practice of ashtanga yoga… from an overview of the yogic philosophy to the importance of the breath in your practice and physical asanas (postures).  David’s experience and devotion to yoga shined through and led me to want to do more and find out more. I developed a daily practice very quickly. The Mysore style class was fantastic as I didn’t feel the pressure to keep up with the class and I could take things at my own pace. The instructions, adjustments and encouragement that I received and continue to receive from David and Paula is enriched with experience and respect for the practice. I witnessed massive improvements in my pain and emotionally it felt like a weight was being lifted.

It has been nearly 3 years since the first time I walked through the doors of Ashtanga Yoga Dublin but it feels like a blink of an eye. The transformation that I have gone through in that short time through the teaching and guidance of David and Paula is immeasurable and I can’t thank them enough for guiding me through it.

Eimear Saunders Having never tried yoga before, I started with the beginner’s course in January 2010. I was hoping it would help me find a quiet place inside myself and possibly help with recently developed asthma. On the first day, I was taken aback by how athletic Ashtanga yoga is, and I felt like I was in over my head, but I was also struck by its beauty and the grace and ease with which David, Paula, Melanie and Ann demonstrated it. And so my journey began…
I was shown the postures in a way that I could understand and as many times as was required before I could do it independently. Everything was (and continues to be) focused on my abilities and needs, and at no time have I ever felt inadequate, this is more about making my own personal practice work for me than doing everything perfectly.
The results have far exceeded my expectations, and are very obvious to the people around me. I have been told several times by people unaware of my practice “whatever you’ve been doing since Christmas, keep it up” so noticeable is the difference in me. I have found that quiet place inside myself, which I visit each morning in practice and carry with me throughout the day. I have found a new enthusiasm and energy for life, which I’m now making the most (and enjoying every second!) of. I have also found I am able to handle day to day stress and strain with good humour and patience. Yoga practice has enhanced and informed my own music teaching, as has the Mysore style of learning. My asthma has improved to the point that on my doctor’s advice I am now cutting down on the medication I’m taking, soon to be off it altogether.
Ashtanga yoga has transformed my life, and as I develop my practice I hope to learn more about it and how and why it has brought about such dramatic change. For now, I am happy to observe the impossible become possible, and the possible become easy, both on and off the mat.

THIS IS THE REAL DEAL!!! If you want to learn how to practice Yoga properly, this is the place to come. All the instructors are passionate about Yoga and excellent teachers. You will move at your own pace, but will see improvements in your practice with every class. It is tough, but you will always find yourself coming back for more!!! I am so grateful that I came across this school!

I started the beginners weekend not really knowing what to expect, but it really exceeded any expectations that I could have had. It has been wonderful for my entire body and has really helped me to keep my life in balance. At the end of each practice I feel better and better.
