Course Content
Course Aims
The aims of the course can be detailed in two areas, and the course content to achieve these aims is detailed in the Modules below.
(i) Aims:
A. Personal Practice:
1. To develop a daily personal Yoga asana practice.
2. To understand the philosophical principles of practice (abhyasa) and non-attachment (vairagya).
3. To know and understand the system of vinyasa krama of Ashtanga Yoga.
4. To develop a regular personal pranayama practice.
5. To develop a regular meditation practice through antar mouna.
6. To understand the practices of pratyahara and dharana, and the principles of dhyana and samadhih.
7. To develop a regular practice of reading Patanjali’s Yoga Sutra and Bhagavad Gita and chanting at least Samadhih and Sadhanah Padah.
8. To develop sattwa sanga, or good practices in relation to Lifestyle and Nutrition.
B: Teaching skills and methodology
1. To develop the primary skills of teaching Yogasana: observation, assessment, anatomy, instruction, alignment, gentle adjustment
2. To be capable of teaching a Beginners Introductory Course covering the fundamental principles of Ashtanga Yoga
3. To be able to teach a Primary Series Guided class
4. To be able to teach a Primary Series Mysore Class
5. To understand the anatomy of, and be able to design prescriptive practice techniques for commonly encountered problems: hamstring strains, knee pain, knee cartilage and ligament strain, backpain, shoulder pain.
Course Content - Module 1
Module 1.
Practice – Asana
(syllabus is Yoga Chikitsa or Yoga Therapy, Primary Series of Ashtanga Yoga as taught by Sri. K Pattabhi Jois)
1. Asana Techniques: Alignment, Vinyasa, Drishti, Bandha, Modifications, Benefits, Precautions. 30hrs.
2. Practice at classes taught by the Senior Tutors: min60 hrs.
3. Practice at workshops given by visiting International Senior teachers: min10hrs

Course Content - Module 2
Practice – Pranayama
1. Preparatory Techniques: Uddiayana Bandha, Agni Sara, Simha Mudra, Jihva Bandha, Brahma Mudra.
2. Pre- Pranayama Techniques: Kapalabhati, Nadi Shodhana
3. Pranayama: puraka, rechaka, kumbhaka, Surya Bhedana, Chandra Bhedana, Sheetali, Ujjaya pranayamas and Bramhari mudra.
4. Anatomy (see Module 5)

Course Content - Module 3
Practice – Pratyahara, Dharana
1. Consciousness and the Mind; Citta, Manas, Buddhi, Ahamkara
2. The Nature of Thought: Citta Vritti
3. Antar Mouna Inner Silence technique.
4. Patanjali’s Objects of Concentraton for developing citta prasadanam, sutra 33 - 39 Samadhih Padah.
5. Guided Dharana; Hridayakash 1 and 2, Bindu.
6. Dharana Practice.

Course Content - Module 4
Yoga Philosophy and History
1. Yoga History: Origins and Branches of Yoga. Lineages, Modern Yoga
2. Philosophy: Bhagavad Gita. Reading, Study, Discussion and Chanting and application of principles to life, practice and teaching.
3. Philosophy: Patanjali Yoga Sutra: samadhih and sadhanah padah and sutra 1-8 of vibhutih padah. Study of Sanskrit, Translation, Discussion, Chanting and application of principles to life, practice and teaching.
4. Other texts: Yoga Mala, Light on Life and Heart of Yoga (see reading list)

Course Content - Module 5
Teaching Methodology and Practice
1. Asana Techniques: Alignment, Vinyasa, Drishti, Bandha, Modifications, Benefits and Precautions. 20hrs (common to Module 1)
2. Principles of Structure and Movement – Anatomy of Hatha Yoga (see Module 5)
3. Adjustment Techniques and Etiquete.10hrs
4. Class organisation and structure.
5. Teaching Observation: Observing classes taught by Senior Tutor; min. 5 Guided Classes and 5 Mysore Style classes. min 15hrs.
6. Teaching Assistance: Assisting at Guided and Mysore Style classes taught by Senior Tutor. min 15hrs.
7. Teaching Practice: Teaching Solo: 2 x Beginners Introductory Classes, 2x Guided Classes and 2 x Mysore Style classes. (all classes observed by Senior Tutor) min 10hrs .
Total Contact: 50hrs min.
Course Content - Module 6
(i)Physical
1. Principles of Structure and Movement: Skeletal System, Joint Structure and Articulation, types of movement at each joint.
2. Factors that restrict movement: Tension, Compression, Orientation, Propertion.
3. Muscular System: Muscles of the; hips and legs, back, shoulder and arm, abdomen, neck.
4. Agonists, Antagonists and Synergists in various postures.
5. Priciples of neuromuscular physiology: Reciprocal inhibition, Spinal reflex arcs, Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitaton, PNF.
6. Muscles systems in Respiration.
7. Physiology of respiration
8. The Circulatory System
(ii) Subtle
1. Kanda, Nadis and Chakras
2. Ida, Pingala and Sushumna
3. Prana Vayus
4. Bija mantra
5. Psyschological Considerations
6. Asana, Vayus and Chakras
7. Pranayama and nadis

Course Content - Module 7
Lifestyle and Nutrition
1. Principles of Yogic Diet
2. The 3 Gunas and diet
3. Principles of Ayurveda
4. Bhagavad Gita and Moderation
5. Cookery Demonstrations and recipes
6. Kriyas: Kapalabhati, Jala Neti, Sutra Neti, Uddiyana Bandha and Nauli
7. Chanting: Shantih Mantra, Aditya Hridayam, Yoga Sutra
